- Otoplasty for young patients usually requires the administration of general anesthesia while for older children and adults a local aesthetic combined with a sedative is given. It is an outpatient procedure.
- An appropriate Otoplasty technique is selected based on the general anatomy of the ears, the extent of the ear cartilage, excessive skin in the surrounding area, or level of deformity in other areas of the ears.
- In one technique once an incision is made behind the ear, exposed ear cartilage is sculpted and re-positioned closer to the head with a series of non-removable stitches.
- In the second technique, the skin of the ear is removed and the ear cartilage is folded back and held in place with non-removable sutures. In this technique cartilage is not removed.
- For total ear reconstruction or congenital microtia (ear absence) a framework is developed from the ribs, then the back is elevated and a skin graft is placed. The ear canal is then carved out.
