- Abdominoplasty or tummy tucks are of two types; complete abdominoplasty and partial abdominoplasty. Both the procedures are generally performed under general or regional anesthesia.
- Complete Abdominoplasty procedure takes about 2-4 hours and involves making an incision just above the pubic area from hip to hip. The skin is then separated from the abdominal wall and the underlying muscles and fascia are tightened and excess fat is removed. The navel is repositioned and the skin is stretched and sutured. When a complete abdominoplasty that includes a lateral thigh lift and improvement of the flank it is called an extended abdominoplasty and when it involves a buttock lift it is called a circumferential abdominoplasty.
- In a partial or mini abdominoplasty, the incision is smaller than it is in complete abdominoplasty. Once the incision is made and the skin and fat are detached from the muscle fascia and the skin is stretched and excess is trimmed and sutured. Sometimes a small portion of the muscle fascia is tightened.
